Why Pigging is Essential for Desalination Pipelines
Desalination is a well-established method of removing salts from seawater in order to produce process water, ultrapure water or potable water. However, seawater intake pipelines, often manufactured from HDPE or GRP, are highly prone to biofouling. Marine growth such as algae, aquatic weeds, barnacles, clams, and mussels can attach to the internal pipe walls and intake points. This build-up restricts flow, increases turbulence and reduces pumping efficiency, significantly raising operating costs. In severe cases, untreated biofouling can eventually block intake systems.
Regular pigging of seawater intake pipelines removes internal marine growth and sediment deposits, restoring flow performance and helping desalination plants remain reliable, efficient and sustainable.
