Pigging Trolley Operations

iNPIPE PRODUCTS™ was approached to supply a pigging trolley and a 30” gauge pig. The gauge pig will prove the pipeline for an upcoming In-Line Inspection (ILI) run. The trolley is intended for use at both the launcher and receiver, which differ in height, are obstructed by a bund and have uneven work surfaces.

To engineer a solution for a single trolley to cover both sites, iNPIPE PRODUCTS™ conducted a site survey of both the launch and receipt sites. The survey provided the necessary measurements for the design.

The scope of the project included:

  • Project management
  • Engineering
  • Design of a pneumatically operated hydraulic system
  • Certification of the pull and push system
  • Certification of lifting and handling points

Project Challenges

  • Straddling a bund with a width of 1050mm and a height of 250mm
  • A height difference of 490mm between the PLRs (Pig Launchers/Receivers)
  • A downward slope for the receiver, whilst the major barrel angled upwards
  • Availability of different types of mechanical lifting equipment onsite for adjusting the trolley

Project Solution

iNPIPE PRODUCTS™ utilised an existing 36” tray with two hydraulic rams. A modified cradle was installed, reducing the tray size from 36” to 30” to accommodate the pigging tool. A pneumatically operated hydraulic system with a joystick operating handle was installed and secured on a dedicated mounting plate on the trolley frame. The trolley frame was designed with 200mm of adjustment available on each leg and 330mm of adjustment by repositioning the cradle, allowing for a total adjustment range of 1555mm.

The trolley was equipped with two lifting methods due to the availability of a crane at one site and a telehandler at the other. The trolley was load tested, and the hydraulic system was also tested.

The pig was loaded on-site and successfully pushed into the reducing barrel to create a seal for launching.

After a successful launch, the trolley was moved to the receipt site and adjusted to suit the receiver closure door. The closure door was opened, and the pig was observed in the major barrel. The pulling bar and chain were attached to the trolley and connected to the pig. The trolley then pulled the pig out of the major barrel and onto the cradle.

The project was completed successfully and within budget. The solution provided allows for an ILI inspection tool to be used for the next pig run within the pipeline.
